Training of Trainers on sexual violence investigation has started for the representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Alexander Darakhvelidze, the Deputy Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, Vahagn Muradyan as well as the Head of the program on violence against women of the Women’s Organization of the United Nations, Irina Jafaridze, attended the opening of the training.
The training program aims to deepen the knowledge of the representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and develop the necessary skills for trainers to further train investigators for ensuring effective investigation of sexual violence. At a later stage, it is planned to train up to 240 investigators who will investigate sexual violence in accordance with the relevant standards.
The participants discussed issues such as: crimes of sexual violence in the context of gender, identifying myths and stereotypes about sexual violence and combating them in accordance with Istanbul Convention and other European standards. Participants will also be introduced to the methodology of conducting training cycles on crimes of sexual violence.
The mentioned training is based on the manual on sexual violence investigation, prosecution and adjudication developed by the Women’s Organization of United Nations, the Council of Europe and the "Equality Now" organization.
The training was implemented with the support of the project of the Council of Europe “Promoting an Integrated Approach to End Violence against Women and Enhancing Gender Equality in Georgia”, Supported by the Swedish Government “United Nations Joint Program on Gender Equality (UNJP) and "Equality Now".
The mentioned project by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia with the support of the Council of Europe has been implemented since 2019. Project aims at supporting the efforts of state authorities in preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, protecting the victims and prosecuting the perpetrators of violence as well as advancing gender equality.
